I was discussing some Bible issues with someone the other day. This person proudly said that the Bible said “ ”. I asked where the Bible said that. In the book of Genesis I believe was the response. We as a society are becoming quite Bible illiterate. I was invited to speak at a church that didn’t have a pastor. My wife and I attended the Sunday school class. We were talking about some minor things in the Bible. One of the deacons of the church passed a question off to me assuming that I would know the answer because I am a pastor.
I have met pastors who do not believe that Jesus was born of a virgin. And Jesus ran into religious folk who didn’t realize that he was the Messiah who was sent by God. How is it that we can have so many Bibles in the world and be so ignorant as to what they say?
The religion I used to belong to had a popular saying that went like this: God helps those who help themselves. When I was a member of this religion I felt sure this saying or at least the concept must be in the Bible. May I say that after I began really studying the Bible that I found that the Bible doesn’t support that idea? As a matter of fact, the weaker one is, the stronger God’s power is.
However, we as a country don’t really read our Bibles; we don’t usually hire teachers who really know the Bible, and we have a tendency to repeat what we hear rather than what we study. This explains why there are so many
denominations in the world. But, many folk want to hear things that they think are in the Bible for their benefit. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; (2 Ti 4:3). The sad fact is that the Bible has so many real cool things in it. And if we really studied the Bible instead of using it to collect dust, we would be a lot better off.
