The one thing I don’t really hear preached anymore is Jesus. I know that some preachers who read this are going to say that they preach Jesus quite often. Actually, I hear more preached about Jesus as opposed to Jesus himself. If I were to ask you if you know Jesus what would you tell me? Where would you find the answer?
Many people would use the New Testament to answer who Jesus is. However, the original Christians used the Old Testament. Take Philip for example, in Acts the eighth chapter he is told by the Holy Spirit to go and witness to a eunuch. The eunuch is reading Esaias (Isaiah). Philip gets on his chariot and witnesses to him. Let’s go to where the eunuch was reading and see what Philip used to teach him about Jesus. Turn to Isaiah the fifty-third chapter.
A description of Jesus is the subject of the first part of the chapter. Our society is seeking to be more perfect on the outside. Jesus was not really a beauty to look at. He was just average in appearance. He grew up as a person would. People would even despise Jesus. They still do. He was acquainted with grief. Jesus suffered as a man and more. Most of us only have to deal with our failures and short comings. Jesus had to put up with rejection from most of his nationality and their religion. He also knew that one day he would have to bear all the sins that would ever be committed since the world began to its end. Sin is something Jesus hated more than anything else.
53:4 tells us that the Jews thought he was punished by God for his doings, but he was punished for our sins because he didn’t commit any Furthermore, we are healed by his stripes. And while he was being punished he didn’t call on the angels or shout insults at those who beat him and put him to death.
This same chapter says that when we make his soul an offering, well read verse ten.
Now you might think you know a lot about Jesus now. This information is but a blink in the eye of Jesus. The thirty three years Jesus was on the earth is what most folk think about Jesus. Yet, Jesus stepped out of eternity past and future to walk this earth. What is thirty three years compared to eternity? The next installment will be called “Tell Me About the Eternal Jesus”. Don’t miss it.
