Why We Should Believe
One thing I don’t really hear preached is why we should believe in Jesus. There is an on going dialog on a wall. It started with Jesus saves, and then other things were added. Then someone covered up Jesus saves. Then other things were added. Someone even wrote “needs a time out.”
There are two main reasons to believe in Jesus. The first is very positive. The other is akin to what would happen if you disobeyed your parents. Let’s look at the positive one first.
The best part of believing in Jesus is that once we believe we are brought into a father child relationship with God. God is a very loving father. Most fathers on earth would gladly give their children the best gifts possible. This explains some of the over indulgences in the world today. The main difference between earthly fathers and our Father in heaven is that God owns everything. God has wisdom beyond our understanding. This enables him to give us gifts that truly benefit us and keep from us gifts that would hurt us.
Some folks want to describe God as a person with a lightning bolt in one hand and a whip in the other. Actually, God is very loving. So much so, that he sent Jesus to die so he wouldn’t have to punish us. That’s the God I serve. The Bible says that God is strongest when we are at our weakest point. That means that there is nothing that God can not over come in my life. Look how God is described in the parable of the prodigal son. One son stays at home without really developing an appreciation for who his father is. The other son goes off and lives with pigs. The folk who Jesus told this too understood this to be about the worst thing that a man could do.
The son comes back to the father smelling pretty bad. Well what would we expect? The man lived with pigs and he made the journey home. The Bible doesn’t say he cleaned up first. He just felt that his father’s servants ate better than he did. What was the father’s response? Well we know the father was looking for him to return because he ran out to the son. As he approached the son he didn’t say, “You stink, go take a bath and we will talk.” He threw his arms around the son and embraced him. This tells me God takes us for what we are. Who wouldn’t want a father like that? God is rejoicing over the son’s return!!!
